How It Works
Compost adds organic matter, improves soil structure, increases water-holding capacity, and provides slow-release nutrients. Field applications are typically 0.25-1 inch (5-20 tons/acre), while garden applications may be 2-4 inches. Only 10-15% of nitrogen in compost is available the first year.
The Formula
Cubic Yards = (Area sq ft × Depth in) ÷ (12 × 27)
Tons = Cubic Yards × Density ÷ 2,000
1 acre at 1 inch depth ≈ 134 cubic yards
Tons = Cubic Yards × Density ÷ 2,000
1 acre at 1 inch depth ≈ 134 cubic yards
Variables
- Depth — Thickness of compost layer (0.25-1" for fields, 2-4" for gardens)
- Density — Weight per cubic yard (typically 900-1,100 lbs)
- N availability — Only 10-15% of compost N is plant-available in year 1
Example
10 acres at 0.5 inch depth: 672 cubic yards, ~336 tons. At $30/cu yd = $20,167 total ($2,017/acre).
Tips
- Have compost tested for nutrients — content varies widely by feedstock.
- Apply and incorporate before planting for best nutrient availability.
- Repeated annual applications build organic matter over 3-5 years.
- Watch for weed seeds in non-thermophilic compost.
