How It Works

Dry matter intake (DMI) is the foundation of livestock nutrition. Animals consume 1.5-4.5% of their body weight in dry matter daily depending on species, size, and production demands. Lactating animals eat the most; maintenance animals eat the least.

The Formula

Daily DMI (lbs) = Body Weight × DMI% / 100
As-Fed (lbs) = DMI ÷ 0.88 (assuming 88% DM feed)

Variables

  • DMI% — Percentage of body weight consumed as dry matter (beef maintenance: 2.0%, dairy lactation: 3.5%)
  • Body Weight — Average animal weight in pounds
  • DM Content — Dry matter percentage of feed (hay ~88%, silage ~35%, grain ~88%)

Example

A 1,200 lb beef cow at maintenance: 1,200 × 2.0% = 24 lbs DM/day. As-fed at 88% DM = 27.3 lbs/day. 50 head = 1,364 lbs/day.

Tips

  • Lactating cows need 50-75% more feed than dry cows — budget accordingly.
  • Cold weather increases intake 10-20% as animals burn energy to stay warm.
  • Feed quality matters: low-quality hay reduces intake because rumen fill limits consumption.
  • Always provide free-choice water — intake drops 10% for every 10% water restriction.
