How It Works
Plant population is determined by row width and in-row spacing. The formula converts spacing in inches to plants per acre using the constant 6,272,640 sq inches per acre. Narrower rows generally increase yield 5-10% by improving light interception.
The Formula
Plants/Acre = 6,272,640 ÷ (Row Width × In-Row Spacing)
Both spacings in inches
Both spacings in inches
Variables
- Row Width — Distance between rows in inches (common: 15, 20, 30, 36, 40)
- In-Row Spacing — Distance between plants within the row in inches
- 6,272,640 — Square inches in one acre (43,560 sq ft × 144 sq in/sq ft)
Example
30-inch rows with 7.5-inch in-row spacing: 6,272,640 ÷ (30 × 7.5) = 27,878 plants/acre. At 95% survival = 26,484 final stand.
Tips
- Narrow rows (15-20") improve soybean yield 5-10% vs 30" rows.
- Corn optimum population ranges from 30,000-36,000 depending on soil and hybrid.
- Twin-row configurations are effectively narrow rows that fit standard equipment.
